The most common invention of the 19th century was the X. Alva J. Fisher has been incorrectly credited with the invention of the X, but between 1804 and 1873, at least 1676 patents were issued by the United States Patent Office for various forms of this device.

Bendix Corporation introduced the first automatic X in 1937, having applied for a patent in the same year. In appearance and mechanical detail, this first X is not unlike the automatic X produced today. Although it included many of the today’s basic features, it lacked any drum suspension and therefore had to be anchored to the floor to prevent “walking”.
