A rite with defence!!

March 22, 2013

There is a particular rite of passage in the Devadasi tradition. There are references made to the “Nitya sumangali” concept in the Silapathikaaram.
After being recognised by the King for her skill and fitness in dancing, the new devadasi is honored by a gift of 1008 gold coins and a garland of green leaves. Elderly ladies of the Devadasi tradition fetched a _______ from the local temple and installed it in the house of the dancing girl. There, the _______ is worshipped and then given to the girl and a regular wedding ceremony is performed. A thali is tied around her neck by an elderly devadasi. Then the _______ is returned to its place in the house after which her first performance is given. Enough said about tradition. FITB
