That He did…

Alfred P. Southwick was a former steam-boat engineer, but later noted dentist and dental educator.

In 1881 he happened to notice a freak accident which occurred in Buffalo, New York. He saw an intoxicated man die after he came in contact with _________. This inspired him to do something.

On August 6, 1890, William Kemmler, a convicted murderer was executed. Southwick was present during his execution.

He is reported to have said

“There is the culmination of ten years work and study! We live in a higher civilization from this day.”

What did he mean by the culmination of ten years work and study? Do we really live in a higher civilisation from the result?
