This term “X” was coined by Gary Larson in a  comic strip called Far Side,in 1982, in which a group of prehistoric cavemen in a faux-modern lecture hall are being taught by their caveman professor that the spikes were named “after the late Y”. The term “X” was initially picked up  by Ken Carpenter, a paleontologist, who used the term during the description of  a fossil at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in 1993.

X has since been adopted as an informal anatomical term.”X”  has been used in displays at Dinosaur National Monument in Utah, in the book The Complete Dinosaur, and in the stegosaur display at the Smithsonian Institution.

ID X and Y if possible.

[P.S-there are recurring jokes amongst the paleontologists that the earliest man who was known to live during the dinosaurs is Y]
