February 12, 2011

After having spent quite a lotta time @tifac and the library @sastra and several sessions of mind-blowing “VETTI” browsing in many internet-cafes,the idea of posting trivias on the blog,to enlighten directly, instead of “PICK”-ing and editing questions from wiki, struck lets begin the new FYI Trivia series…….

The most prestigious literary award in India, The Jnanpith Award is presented by the trust, Bharatiya Jnanpith. First instituted in 1961, the award carries a check for Rs. 500,000, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Vagdevi, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts.

This Vagdevi statue belonged originally to the Saraswati Temple at Dhar (Ujjayini), installed by the Scholar- King Bhoj in 1035 A.D The statue, taken away from India, is now in the British Museum , London. Bharatiya Jnanpith, adopting it as a symbol for the award, has added a ‘Bhamandal’. halo of effulgence, at the back within which are set the tri-beams, representing ratnatraya of the famed Jain toran gate at Kankali Mathura, one of the oldest in India A bronze-cast replica of the image is presented to the Award winner. The lotus pedestal has fifteen petals representing the Indian languages covered by the award. Vagdevi holds in her hands a kamandalu, a book, a stalkless lotus and a rosary: the symbols associated with learning and spiritual insight.

[P.S-i hope this trivia series helps to be a good source of centralized trivia hub]
